Our History

West Cornwall, a place often affected by damaging gales in the autumn and winter but also a place which is suited to the successful outdoor growing of both native and exotic species of plants collected by the many famous plant collectors.

The Peninsula Garden Society was formed in 1993, when a group of keen and knowledgeable gardeners in West Cornwall decided to form a club to meet and share information with the aim of increasing their knowledge of gardening and horticulture. The group chose Lamorna Village Hall as their meeting place and we continue to meet there today.

The Peninsula Garden Society held its first formal meeting on 20th October 1993. The first committee comprised:

Brian Dodd - Chair

Peter Maddern - Secretary

Maryella Piggott - Treasurer

Other members of that first committee included Avril Taylor, Brian Blowers, Jennifer Hilliard, Kate Pearson and Peter Blacker.

The guest speaker at the first meeting was Philip McMillan-Browse who, in his distinguished career had been the director of the Royal Horticultural Society garden at Wisley and horticultural director at the Lost Gardens of Heligan.

The Last 32 Years
Since that first meeting in 1993, our members have enjoyed many memorable activities over the years, including a wide range of entertaining and informative speakers, memorable visits to many of Cornwall's great gardens and parties, lunches, cream teas and barbecues many of which were held at members' gardens.

And there is still so much to look forward to.........
