Gardening in the far west of Cornwall

Flower Count 2026

On New Year's Day, one of our founding members,

Maryella Pigott would always record what was flowering

in her garden.

This year, we have taken it a step further and introduced

The Peninsula Garden Society Flower Count.

The aim of the Flower Count is to build on the information already being recorded on our Local Flora and Fauna page and seek to establish if plants are flowering for longer or flowering earlier; a key indicator of a changing climate.

We have asked our members to count up the number of species of plant flowering in their garden on 1st January 2026 and to send us a list. These have now been collated and the results can be found here.

Key findings from the 2026 Flower Count

  • There were 316 plants blooming in 18 members' gardens;

  • Of these 316 plants, there were 186 different plants;

  • 15 varieties of Camellia were blooming;

  • 15 varieties of Geranium were blooming;

  • 13 varieties of Vinca were blooming; and

  • 11 varieties of Osteospermum were blooming

Alongside this, we also asked our members to send us a selection of photographs of what was blooming in their gardens. The photographs are below and include the location  so that we can compare what is blooming in different locations. You may click on any image to enlarge it.

Thank you to all of our members that have taken part. We intend to make this an annual count so that comparisons can be drawn from year to year.
